There is a distinct magic to the South Shore of Long Island when the summer humidity starts to mix with the evening ocean breeze. When Anne and Josh suggested heading out to Smith Point County Park for their engagement session, I knew we were in for something special.

These two are tying the knot this October, and getting them in front of the camera ahead of the big day was the perfect way to capture their energy.

For their session, we intentionally planned two completely different looks to lean into two very distinct vibes.

Part 1: The Maritime Path & An Unexpected Guest

We started the evening walking along the wooden boardwalk paths that wind through the protected coastal dunes. The vegetation out here is incredibly lush, filled with thick beach grass and low pine trees that create a gorgeous, untamed backdrop before you even touch the sand.

Anne wore a classic, short white dress that popped perfectly against the deep greens of the dunes, while Josh kept it relaxed in a green polo and shorts.

While we were shooting along the path, we actually crossed paths with a local white-tailed deer hanging out right in the greenery. It’s one of those spontaneous, unscripted moments you can’t plan for, but absolutely sets the tone for a relaxed day.

Pro Tip for Long Island Beach Sessions: If you're shooting near the dune paths during a humid summer evening, the bugs can get intense the second the wind drops. Plan accordingly with some eco-friendly insect repellent or maybe even plan your fits accordingly so you can stay focused on enjoying the moment rather than swatting away flies.

Part 2: Running Into the Surf at Blue Hour

As the sun began to dip, it was time for the vibe shift. Anne changed into a flowing, longer beach dress, and Josh switched out his polo for a crisp white button-down.

We walked down to the shoreline just as golden hour melted into a deep, moody blue hour. The sky was doing something truly spectacular right before a summer rainstorm rolled in, casting a dramatic, romantic light across the water.

Anne and Josh didn’t hesitate for a second. They kicked off their shoes, ran straight into the South Shore surf, and just focused on each other. Watching them play in the waves and laugh through the crashing water is exactly what unscripted photography is about. It wasn't about rigid posing; it was just about capturing two people entirely wrapped up in the excitement of the season they're in.

October is right around the corner, and if their energy at the beach was any indication, their wedding is going to be an absolute dream to document.
